It is upon us: the cosmos’ supreme season for traveling and relaxation. Plan a sizzling summer exchange vacation with RCI on the Outer Banks, at Lake Tahoe or on Cape Cod—three destinations where you can both enjoy the sun and beat the heat with a wet reprieve.
With an expansive 40 miles of National Seashore, Cape Cod (featured above) is New England’s coastal dreamboat. There are endless ways—big and small—to enjoy this distinctly serene peninsula: Perch forever on Lighthouse Beach, for example, or pedal the 22-mile paved Rail Trail to absorb sweeping New England views in no time.
Head to the northern tip of the cape to be fabulous in Provincetown with heaven-sent buttery pink cupcakes from ScottCakes, a brick-and-mortar ode to sugar and glam. (Scott might even take your picture.) Take in a flick at the Wellfleet Drive-In Theatre. Let the days slide by with a lobster roll here, overlooking the undulating dunes; a novel there, under the shady spot.
Take in a summer sunrise, or sunset, from the sand dunes on the Outer Banks.
Escape to tranquility on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Spend hours, or days, basking on the main attraction: more than 100 miles of pristine shoreline dotted with poetic lighthouses. Then trot up to Nags Head and scale the East Coast’s tallest, active dune in Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Once you’re at the top, put on your adventure hat and go sand boarding or catch some air by hang-gliding back down. For those who prefer more low-key activities, fly a kite or bring a picnic and catch the sunset from atop the ridge.
Just 5 miles away is Roanoke Island Festival Park, a 25-acre wonderland of interactive history that takes you right back to 1585, the year of the first English settlement attempt. Play old-time games, see how the blacksmith does his thing or board the Elizabeth II, where you can raise anchor, shoot the breeze with colorful sailors and even swab a deck.
At Lake Tahoe, travelers can enjoy summer’s long days at the beach or in the mountains.
For those who prefer to stay active during their vacations, Lake Tahoe is a place to do just that. Whether it’s kayaking to Fannette Island, mountain biking the 165-mile Tahoe Rim Trail or hiking the Rubicon, there’s no shortage of exhilarating activities, which are matched only by Lake Tahoe’s nearly endless sunshine and stunning mountains and beaches.
If—when—you need a break from the extreme lifestyle, why not take a slow glide on a lazy gondola or indulge in some shopping therapy in downtown Truckee? Or, if you’re still feeling competitive, knock some balls in a game of bocce at Truckee River Winery. Finally, it’ll be time to cross off the easiest thing on your list: a day at the beach. Soak up the sun at Sand Harbor, a beautiful beach with a boat launch, picnic tables, public bathrooms and lifeguards during summer.
