Trivia Time: Destination Orlando

With seemingly limitless entertainment, Orlando’s theme parks, restaurants and wide variety of activities draw enthusiastic vacationgoers year-round. This should be no surprise to Club Members, many of whom own or have visited one of four Hilton Grand Vacations properties here multiple times.

However, Orlando still has a few fun facts that even frequent visitors might not know.

  1. There are more than 100 lakes in Orlando.
  2. Hollywood helped the city fund the demolition of its previous city hall by “blowing it up” during the first scene of Lethal Weapon 3.
  3. Orlando’s City Hall is home to two free art galleries: The Terrace Gallery and the Mayor’s Gallery.
  4. "The City Beautiful” is Orlando’s nickname.
  5. In 1984, Orlando resident Joe Kittinger was the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean solo in a gas balloon.
  6. Parts of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were filmed in Orlando in 1984—one of many movies shot in the city and state.
  7. 17.15 million visitors spent at least one night in Orlando during spring 2017.
  8. The E.T. Adventure is Universal Studios Florida’s only ride that has operated since the park’s opening day in 1990.
  9. Before Orlando had theme parks, its biggest industries were citrus, cattle and cotton.
  10. In 1949, Gatorland became the city’s first theme park.
