Meet Austin. Here you can eat tacos for breakfast and add jalapenos to your margaritas, dance to tunes coming from neighborhood dives or big-name festivals like South by Southwest and Austin City Limits, and treat your closet to something truly unique. With its odd eats, beats and eclectic offerings, Austin is a town that prides itself on being weird. But in a wonderful way.
In the capital of Texas, it's not hard to find breakfast tacos on the menu. Photo by Alaina McDavid, Flickr.
Venture through the eclectic South Congress neighborhood, where you can pick up a few statement pieces from shops like Creatures Boutique, sporting fine shoes, frills, trinkets and treasures created by independent and local designers, or a quirky costume piece from Lucy in Disguise with Diamonds. Next up: Treat yourself to some good old-fashioned Tex-Mex at Habanero Mexican Cafe. Bring cash and a craving for spicy before chowing down on carne asada or biting into a Zach Attack, a flour tortilla with your choice of meat and spicy queso (of course!) served with rice.
The state capital sits near Texas’ limestone-bedded Hill Country, making Austin a perfect playing ground for outdoorsy travelers to pair city excursions with fresh-air retreats. But you don’t have to leave the city’s borders to enjoy the lovely Central Texas scenery. Rent a boat or test your balance atop a stand-up paddleboard at Lady Bird Lake. For a more serene outing, take a dip in Barton Springs Pool. Underground springs feed the pool (located just southwest of downtown) and keep it at an agreeable average temperature of 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
To get a glimpse of the pink granite limestone that is so unique to the Lone Star State, head further into the Hill Country to Enchanted Rock, less than two hours northwest of Austin. Climb to the top of this pink rock and watch as it begins sparkling beneath you during sunset.
Make your home base an RCI resort. Stay at WorldMark Austin, which features an outdoor pool and is conveniently located near Lady Bird Lake. Just steps away, discover the state capitol and vibrant Sixth Street, where you can catch a show any day of the week, browse art galleries and bite into some Texas-sized barbecue brisket and pulled pork at nearby establishments like Gebby’s BBQ.
