Want to ski, hike, bowl and play on your next vacation? Head straight for Sälen in Sweden’s central mountains, where lucky travelers may even get a glimpse of the mystical aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights.
Sälen brings a lot to the table in every season: from hosting Vasaloppet — the world’s oldest and longest annual cross-country ski race that takes place the last Sunday of March—to a variety of Midsummer Eve festivities filled with folk music, dancing, costumes and games around a maypole in summer.
Nestled in Sälen and near the Norwegian border, Skistar’s Lindvallen is the place to set your vacation-planning gaze. Home to one of the biggest contiguous ski areas for children and beginners, Lindvallen serves-up a ski school plus a variety of family-friendly skiing and sledding slopes as well as an adventure area.

For adults looking for a little fun on their own, Lindvallen offers day-care services for you and your significant other to enjoy a day at the spa or tackle trails a little too advanced for your wee ones. Try SkiStar’s funslope featuring funky curves, waves and adventures that culminate in a fairy tale ride set on a blue trail’s stage.
For a more relaxing getaway with fewer people, plan a vacation outside of winter. Late spring through early fall the region transforms and blooms, turning into lush green forests followed by bursts of red and yellow autumnal foliage. Plus, the weather is warmer and fewer people are on the mountain during the off ski season, which opens up additional vacation activities like hiking, wandering, biking, fishing and canoeing . Take a chair lift up and choose the best path (based on your appropriate level of difficulty) and hike back down. Then, opt to canoe along the exciting Görälven or Faluån rivers or the calmer waters of the Västerdalälven River. No matter what activity you choose, keep an eye out for the area’s diverse wildlife—including beavers, foxes, elk and lynxes—during these months.

Additionally, the resort’s Experium (experience center) boasts a 3,000-square-foot adventure pool that includes the country’s first indoor surfing machine, not to mention a bowling alley, 3D movie theater, spa and culinary delights from across the globe.
Make your Swedish home with RCI at Skistar Vacation Club Timmerbyn C#394, located in the center of Lindvallen. Walking distance from the slopes, this property also features on site a water park, wave pool, tennis facilities, sauna and spa treatments, and miniature golf.
